What a Standing Seam Roof Actually Is

Standing seam describes a joint, not a brand. Everything else about the roof follows from how that joint is made and where the fasteners sit.

Standing seam is a description of a joint, not a brand and not a finish. Everything else about the roof follows from how that joint is made and where the fasteners sit relative to it. If you understand the joint you can walk a jobsite and tell in ten seconds whether you are looking at the product you were quoted.

The panel

One piece of metal from ridge to eave

A standing seam panel is a flat strip of coated steel or aluminium, roll formed to length, with both long edges bent upward. It is normally cut to run the entire slope in one piece: from the ridge, or from just under the ridge cap, all the way down to the eave. On a typical St. Louis two-storey rear slope that might be a run of twenty or thirty feet with no horizontal joint anywhere in it.

That is the first structural difference from a shingle roof. A shingle roof is several thousand small overlapping pieces, each one relying on the piece above it to cover its nails. A standing seam roof is a few dozen long pieces with no horizontal laps at all in the field. Water that lands on it has nowhere to get in except at the seams, the eave, the ridge, and wherever something penetrates the plane.

Panel width is a design decision rather than a fixed number. Narrower panels give you more seams and a stronger vertical rhythm, and they resist visible waviness better. Wider panels are cheaper per square of coverage and show more of the flat surface, which is where any imperfection in the deck below is going to appear.

The seam

Snap lock, or mechanically seamed

Where two panels meet, the upturned edges lock. There are two common ways of closing that lock, and the difference is not cosmetic.

If a contractor is quoting metal for a shallow porch or a low pitched rear addition and there is no seaming machine anywhere in the conversation, that is a question worth asking out loud. Ask which seam profile is being installed, ask what slope the panel manufacturer permits for that profile, and ask to see where that minimum is written down.

The clip is the part nobody photographs Between the panels and the deck sit the clips. They screw to the deck, the panel edge hooks over them, and the seam closes above. On a properly detailed roof many clips are designed to let the panel slide slightly as it heats and cools, because a long metal panel expands measurably on a July afternoon and has to be allowed to. A clip that pins the panel rigidly at both ends is how you get oil canning and, over time, elongated fastener holes.

The metal itself

Gauge, coating and finish are three separate questions

Three specifications get confused with each other constantly, and a quote that leaves any of them out is not a quote you can compare to another one.

Gauge is the thickness of the steel. A lower gauge number means thicker metal. Thicker panels are stiffer, flatter under the eye, and better at shrugging off a hailstone without taking a permanent dimple. They also cost more and are heavier to handle. This is the single number most likely to be quietly different between two quotes that look similar.

The metallic coating is what stops the steel rusting: a zinc or a zinc and aluminium alloy layer applied at the mill, underneath any colour. Aluminium panels skip this question entirely because aluminium does not rust, which is why they show up near coasts and occasionally on houses where the owner never wants to think about it again.

The paint finish is the colour layer on top, and it is the thing the warranty document is usually about. Finish warranties are written by the coating manufacturer, not by the roofer, and they cover chalking, fading and adhesion. They do not cover leaks, they do not cover dents, and they are not a workmanship guarantee. Read which one you are being handed.

Standing seam is also not the only metal roof shape. Metal shingles, stone coated steel tiles and standing seam are three different products with three different price points and three different failure modes, and salespeople blur them freely. If the sample board has interlocking tiles on it, you are not looking at standing seam.
